Offline word game

A word game that keeps working when you are offline

Wordtide is a web app, so it opens in a browser with no download. It is also built to keep going when the connection drops: on a plane, on the underground, in the car or anywhere the signal is weak. Here is what works offline, what needs a connection and how to set it up in a minute.

Play Wordtide freeNo download, no sign-up. Opens in your browser.

Set it up once, online

Open Wordtide while you have a connection and play a few moves in each mode you want to take with you. That stores the game, your world's dictionary and the tile font on your device, so they are there later.

Then add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. On Android and on most computers, use the browser's Install option. On iPhone or iPad, open Wordtide in Safari, tap the Share icon and choose Add to Home Screen.

What works without a connection

Solo play: when the live world cannot be reached, the game switches to an offline world of your own, where friendly AI players add words now and then so the board never feels empty.

The Daily Seven: the day's letters are worked out on your device, so you can play the daily puzzle with no signal. Solo Journey: all 100 levels run locally. Little Tide: the kids mode, including its spoken words, works offline once it has been opened.

What needs a connection

Anything shared with other people needs the internet: the live board with other players, leagues, your Tide's territory, crews, friend challenges and the Weekend Cup. When you come back online, the game looks for the live world again and syncs your Journey stars and XP. A small status pill on screen tells you when you are offline.

Light on data and storage

Each language's word list is packed into a compact word graph, so a dictionary is a small download, and only the worlds you actually play are kept. If your device runs low on space, the game keeps fewer of them. Updates download in the background and wait until you tap Refresh, so a game is never cut off halfway.

Questions

Do I need to install an app from a store?

No. Wordtide works from the browser. Adding it to the home screen is optional, but it makes the offline modes easier to reach.

Why does it not work offline the first time?

Your device can only keep what it has already loaded. Open each mode once while online, then it will work without a connection.

Is my offline progress lost?

No. Journey stars and XP are sent to your player when you are back online. Words in the offline world stay in that world on your device; they are not added to the shared live board.

Does it work offline in other languages?

Yes. Each of the 39 board languages has its own dictionary, and the one for the world you play in is stored on your device.
