How the world grows

  1. One board.

Every word anyone plays lands on the same endless board. No rooms, no lobbies, no waiting.

  2. Everyone’s words.

Your word hooks onto a stranger’s. Theirs hooks onto yours. The crossings are where the points are.

  3. Forever.

Islands of words keep growing out across the sea, and the Tides race to paint them.

How it works

Learn it in ten seconds.

  1. Step 1: Grab seven tiles

A fresh rack the moment you arrive. Drag tiles onto the board, or tap a square and type.

  2. Step 2: Hook onto any word

Build off the words other players left behind. Every new word has to touch the world.

  3. Step 3: Score and stay

Bonus squares multiply your points, and your words stay on the map for everyone to find.

The world right now

Somewhere out there, a word just landed.

The World Dictionary

Every word anyone plays lights up the open dictionary. Play one nobody has, and it’s yours.

An illustrated map of the Wordtide world: islands of words in different lands, painted in the four Tide colours, with lighthouses where words were found first and a little boat sailing between them.
    • Nine lands to explore

Sail out from the sheltered Harbor to Ember Peaks, Sakura Vale and the Neon Quarter. Every land has its own colours and its own bonus squares.

    • Light a lighthouse

Play a word nobody has ever played and a lighthouse lights up with your name on it, for good.

    • Paint it with your Tide

Every word colours the map for your Tide. Zoom out to the whole world and see whose colours are spreading.

    Set foot on the map

In the game, tap the world map or press Shift+M to see all of it.

    Four ways to play

Join the crowd, or take it slow.

Every mode is free and ready in seconds. Switch any time, and your progress comes with you.

      Treasure under the tiles

Play again within 60 seconds and your chain grows, up to ×1.5 XP. It only boosts XP, never the score, so leagues stay fair.

A Little Tide round: Tidy the otter, a bear picture and big letter tiles spelling b, e, a, r.

    Kids & families · ages 3+

First words, with a friend called Tidy.

In Little Tide, Tidy the otter shows a picture and your little one spells it tile by tile, by sound. Every word plants a flower in a garden that children everywhere grow together. No timers and no way to fail.

    Safety built into every mode

    • No chat, anywhere

Players cheer each other with six preset reactions. There is no chat or messaging.

    • Names kept kind

Names are filtered, kids can pick a friendly “Brave Otter” style name, and a name you report disappears from your screen at once, and from everyone’s once a few players report it, until we review it.

    • Nothing about your child

The garden counts words, not children: no names, no ids, no locations. No ads and no trackers, ever.

    Our promise

A game you can hand to anyone.

From a three-year-old to their great-grandparent: free to play, nothing to hide, nothing that pulls them away from the words.

    • No ads for kids

Little Tide and kids’ profiles never show ads. Teens and adults may see ads at natural breaks, never mid-move, and watching one for a reward is always your choice.

    • No tracking for kids

On our website, kids’ profiles load no tracking and no ad code. On game portals we never request ads for kids, but the portal runs its own code around the game. Teens only get non-personalised ads. We never sell your data.

    • No pay-to-win

Badges, titles and the Tide Pass are earned by playing. Optional extras for grown-ups (no ads between games, tile skins, hint packs) never change how a word scores and never earn league or Tide Pass points. A word revealed by a hint never counts for leagues.

    • Built with children’s safety in mind

No chat, only friendly preset reactions. Names are filtered, rude words are filtered, and players can report anything we missed.

    • An open dictionary

The public-domain ENABLE word list. A word counts because anyone can check it.

    • No email needed

Save your progress with a passkey or a recovery code. Nothing else to hand over.

Big tiles. Clear sounds. Your pace.

Shaky hands, tired eyes, a screen reader or a toddler on your lap: every setting is one tap away, in every mode.

    Try Easy mode
    • Easy mode: Bigger squares, bigger letters, labelled buttons.
    • Keyboard only: Every move works without a mouse.
    • Game controller: Stick or d-pad to move, shoulder buttons to pick a tile, A to place it.
    • Screen readers: A dedicated mode that reads the board.
    • Read aloud: Letters, words and feedback, spoken.
    • High contrast: Solid panels and stronger outlines.
    • Colour-blind safe: Biomes told apart by more than hue.
    • Calm board: No particles or drift, whatever your OS says.

    Questions

    Good to know.

Anything else? The press kit has the full fact sheet.

    Is Wordtide really free?

Yes. Wordtide is free to play, with no subscription and no pay-to-win. Badges, titles and the Tide Pass are earned by playing. Optional extras for grown-ups, like tile skins and hint packs, never change how a word scores and never earn league or Tide Pass points. Ads may appear for teens and adults, never in Little Tide or in kids’ profiles.

    Do I need an account?

No. Open the page and you are playing. If you want to keep your progress across devices, save it with a passkey or a recovery code. We never ask for an email address.

    Is it safe for children?

Wordtide is built for ages 3 and up. There is no chat, only preset emoji reactions. Player names are filtered, and the word list has a blocklist for rude words. Little Tide, the mode for the youngest players, has nothing to read, no timers and no way to fail.

What happens to my words on the shared board?

They stay. Every word anyone plays lands on the same endless map, and other players can hook new words onto yours. You even earn points when someone builds on your words.

    Which dictionary do you use?

The public-domain ENABLE word list, almost 168,000 words, plus our own blocklist for rude words. Anyone can read it, so a valid word never depends on a secret list.

How do Tides and leagues work?

When you start, you join one of four Tides: Coral, Kelp, Lagoon or Sunset. Your words colour the map for your Tide. Each week you also play in a league of up to 30 players. The top players rise a tier, from Ripple all the way to Leviathan, and everything resets on Monday.

Can I play on my phone, or offline?

Wordtide runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, and you can install it like an app. The Live World needs a connection; solo play keeps working offline after your first visit.

    Is Wordtide accessible?

Largely, yes. You can play with the keyboard alone, use a screen reader, and switch on Easy mode with big tiles, high contrast, a colour-blind-safe palette, read-aloud and a calm, motion-free board. See our accessibility statement for the gaps we are still fixing.

    Who makes Wordtide?

Wordtide is designed and built by the Wordtide team, a small independent studio. Press, schools and partners can find facts and images in our press kit and reach us through the contact form.
