About Wordtide
Effective November 4, 2026
Wordtide is a free word game played on one infinite board that everyone shares. Every word anyone places stays on the map for the next player to build on.
What Wordtide is
- One shared board. The live world has no rounds and no rooms: you get a rack of letters and build off the words other players left, with bonus squares, islands and weekly tide goals.
- Daily Seven. One seven-letter puzzle a day, the same for everyone, with an archive of past days.
- Journey. 100 hand-made levels on eight islands.
- Little Tide. Picture and sound rounds for ages 3 and up, with no ads, chat, purchases or tracking (for parents).
- 39 language worlds. Each language has its own board, its own dictionary and its own letter values, not a translation of the English game.
- Free word tools. Word finders, an unscrambler, a rhyming dictionary and word search puzzles, in English and many other languages, with free widgets for other sites.
Everything is free in the browser, with no sign-up, and the children's modes never show ads.
How the word lists are built
- Only openly licensed sources. English uses ENABLE, a public-domain word list. Every other language comes from a public-domain, permissively licensed (BSD, MIT, MPL, CC BY) or share-alike list; where a list is share-alike, the derived file is published with its attribution.
- Never official tournament lists. We do not use any commercial or tournament word list, and letter values and tile counts are computed from our own lists, not copied from other games.
- Blocklists. Slurs and obscenities are removed using the LDNOOBW lists (CC BY 4.0), words that Wiktionary tags only as vulgar or offensive, and our own lists of stems and inflected forms. A second, display-only list keeps sensitive words playable but never shows them to other players or on public pages.
- Pronunciations and definitions. English rhymes come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary; short English definitions come from Princeton WordNet.
Every source, licence, version and retrieval date is listed on the licences and credits page.
Editorial standards for the word tools
- Real board words. Every word on a list page is a word the game accepts, so a list is exactly what you can play. Words the game accepts but never displays are left out.
- Everyday words first. Lists put common words before rare ones. The order comes from how often words are used in a large subtitle corpus (FrequencyWords) and, for English, the SCOWL familiarity levels; no counts are published, only the order.
- Points are Wordtide points. Scores shown next to words are Wordtide tile values before bonus squares.
- Thin pages are not indexed. A list with fewer than 20 words stays reachable but asks search engines not to index it, and is left out of the sitemap.
- Rhymes are computed, not guessed. Perfect rhymes share every sound from the last stressed vowel; near rhymes are ranked by how close their sounds are. Two-word rhymes are not shown, because they could not be made reliably from the data.
- Reports are reviewed. If a word should not be listed, or a list looks wrong, tell us and we review it.
Contact
Questions, corrections, press and partnerships go through one form: wordtide.app/contact. Press material is in the press kit, and the rules explain how the game is scored.
