Word pattern finder

Know some letters and where they go? Type the pattern with blanks for the gaps, add letters the word must have or can't have, and every English word that fits appears below, most common first.

Type a pattern like c_o_s or qu*, or letters the word must have.

How to search by pattern

Each character of the pattern is one letter of the word. A letter means that letter in that spot; ? _ . or - mean any letter. A * means any run of letters, none included, and you can use it twice: *zz* finds every word with a double Z anywhere. Patterns go up to 15 letters, the longest words the board takes.

The must-include box takes letters the word has somewhere. Put a number after a letter for a spot it is not in, the way a five-letter guessing puzzle tells you a letter is in the word but in the wrong place. The not box drops every word that uses those letters in an open spot.

Questions

How do I write a pattern?

Type the letters you know where they go, and a ? _ or . for each letter you don't know: c_o_s finds CHOPS, CLOGS and CROPS. A * stands for any number of letters, so qu* finds every word starting with QU and *ight every word ending in IGHT.

What does r2 mean in the must-include box?

The word has an R, but not as its 2nd letter. Add more spots with commas (a1,3) and type a letter twice (ee) when the word needs two of it. Letters in the not box can still sit in a spot you filled in yourself.

Which words does it know?

The same English list as Wordtide's board: ENABLE, a public-domain list of about 168,000 words, with offensive words removed. The list loads once into your browser and every search runs on your device.

Why are some words listed first?

Words most people know come first, then the higher-scoring ones by Wordtide's letter values. Rarer words are still there: press Show more under any length.
